The Committee on Environmental Improvement (CEI) supports the ACS strategic plan objective: Transforming the World: To focus on challenges and opportunities at the intersection of chemistry and society that improve the quality of human life.

The Committee promotes opportunities that enhance the chemical community’s awareness of and response to sustainability challenges. Sustainability means providing for the environmental and human health, economic and societal needs of today without compromising the progress and success of future generations. It addresses the major challenges of energy, food for a growing population, and clean drinking water. Chemists can have a vital role in each of these objectives.
