The mission of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® (ACS GCI) is to enable and catalyze the implementation of green chemistry and engineering principles into all aspects of the global chemical enterprise.
After more than a year of planning by individuals from industry, government, and academia, the Green Chemistry Institute was incorporated in 1997 as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation devoted to promoting and advancing green chemistry. On January 1, 2001, the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® became part of ACS operations in Washington, D.C. The two organizations joined to pursue their joint interests in the discovery and design of chemical products and processes that eliminate generation and use of hazardous substances.
The members of the governing board come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. They share the conviction that green chemistry is a fundamental building block in the efforts to create a sustainable economy.
The ACS Green Chemistry Institute® has two dozen international chapters that participate in green chemistry education by hosting events, publishing materials, and increasing the public’s knowledge of green chemistry.
