Nominations for 2011 ACS National Awards

The American Chemical Society awards program is one of the means by which the society meets its obligation “to encourage…the advancement of chemistry in all its branches, the promotion of research in chemical science and industry, [and] the improvement of the qualifications and usefulness of chemists.” The continuing excellence of the ACS awards program requires that a number of highly qualified chemistry professionals be nominated and that great care be taken in preparing the nominations.

Nominating Procedures for the 2011 ACS National Awards

2011 ACS National Awards being administered by the ACS to be presented in 2011 are being solicited. Any individual, except a member of the award committee or a Board member during their terms of service on the Board, may submit only one nomination or one support form for each award in any given year. In nomination by petition, the person whose signature is first will be considered as the nominator and the endorsements that follow will be disregarded.

Required: A completed nomination form with a recommendation of not more than 1,000 words evaluating the nominee’s accomplishments and a specific identification of the work to be recognized. A biographical sketch, which includes date of birth, and contact information (phone, fax and email). A list of publications and patents by the nominee, an analysis of patents is especially valuable.

When nominating for the ACS Award for Creative Invention, a copy of the patent must be submitted with the nominating documents.

Optional: No more than two support forms containing factual information not given in the nomination form may be included.

Nominations are now being accepted for the ACS Award for Computers in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research and the ACS Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Science and Technology. Because we are seeking a sponsor, we are not accepting nominations for the Arthur W Adamson Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Surface Chemistry for 2011.

If your technical division or company is interested in sponsoring any of these awards, please contact the ACS Awards Office at 1-800-227-5558 x6283 or f_dixon@acs.org

Nominations and inquires concerning awards should be directed to the Office of the Awards Program awards@acs.org.

The deadline date for all nominating material for 2011 ACS National Awards is November 1, 2009. Earlier transmittal is encouraged.

The nomination process follows a multi-year cycle encompassing a series of procedures, forms, and committees. Award candidates who are not selected will automatically be considered for two additional award cycles as part of the renomination process.

We would like to thank all those who submitted nominations for the 2010 award cycle, which ended November 1, 2008. The 2010 award recipients will be announced at the 238th ACS National Meeting in Washington, DC.
