ACS looks to you, the future chemists, to guide our efforts to respond to the global challenges of sustainability (of energy, food and water, for example). We invite you to participate in the Sustainability Engagement Event, to be held at the 239th ACS National Meeting in San Francisco on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, 3:00 – 5:30p.m. Sign-up to be a sustainability explorer, submit your ideas, and register to participate at http://www.acs.org/sustainability.
  • Sign Up Today for National Lab Day
On November 23, 2009, President Obama announced the establishment of National Lab Day, part of a large, ongoing initiative called “Educate to Innovate”, supported by ACS and 190 other organizations representing more than 6.5 million science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) professionals. The goal of National Lab Day is to help stimulate more hands-on science learning by fostering enduring collaborations between individual STEM professionals, teachers and students. ACS Chemistry Ambassadors are already making these connections. The first National Lab Day is tentatively set for early May 2010. To sign up, go to www.Nationallabday.org, and for ideas on how you can join the effort, go to http://www.acs.org/chemistryambassadors.
  • Bloggers Wanted for inChemistry Magazine
Did your chapter recently face a recent challenge and find a way to successfully overcome it? If so, blog about it in the Rxn’s and Sln’s column in the April/May 2010 issue of inChemistry. Whether the challenge was something unexpected, such as a last minute snafu that occurred before an event, or an ongoing issue related to fundraising, meetings, or chapter participation, collaborating with another group, etc., we want to hear from you. For more information about submitting a blog entry, contact Lori Betsock at l_betsock@acs.org .

  • ACS Strategic Plan for 2010 and Beyond Launches
The “ACS Strategic Plan for 2010 and Beyond” is available online at http://strategy.acs.org (for mobile devices at http://strategy.acs.org/mobile/). Our vision, mission, and core values continue as the foundation of the plan; the six strategic goals and supporting strategies explain how we will fully realize our vision of “Improving people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry.” Student members are encouraged to review the plan today, and share your own priorities for the Society in the discussions associated with each goal.
  • Apply by February 1, 2010 for Student Awards in Green Chemistry
The Joseph Breen Memorial Fellowship sponsors young international green chemistry scholars to participate in any international green chemistry technical meeting, conference, or training program of their choosing. “Young” international scholar is defined as undergraduate students, graduate students, and post doctoral scholars. • Nominations for the 2010 Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry Solicited
The purpose of this award, offered by the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry, is to recognize achievement by undergraduate students in inorganic chemistry and to encourage further study in the field. Every ACS-approved department is eligible to nominate one student for this award. The student nominee will have demonstrated excellence in inorganic chemistry at the undergraduate level based on any combination of research, coursework, and/or motivation, interest, dedication as defined by their nominating institution and should have future plans that include a career in chemistry. Each student nominated will receive a certificate and letter of commendation from the Chair of the Division of Inorganic Chemistry.

A request for nominations will be sent to the Chairs of all ACS-approved departments in January.
