  • Enter in the 2009 Chemvention Competition. Prizes, Prizes, Prizes $$$!
The theme for National Chemistry Week(NCW) 2010 is Chemistry Behind the Scenes! Students will develop a hands-on activity for elementary school children in grades 4-6 that showcases the difference between what we see in television, movies, and literature and the real science behind the “magic” and mystery of special effects, hair/make-up, etc. ACS student chapters must register with the Office of Community Activities at oca@acs.org by 4 pm on Monday, October 12, 2009 to participate in the competition. Click the link for more details on contest rules, prizes, etc. Direct any other questions to ncw@acs.org.
  • Student Chapters Going Green
With the start of the school year, it’s a great time to start planning this year’s green chemistry activities. ACS student chapters can be recognized for their efforts to go green through the Green Chemistry Student Chapter Award. To earn the award, undergraduate student chapters must complete at least three different green chemistry activities over the course of the academic year and include them in their chapter report. National Chemistry Week (October 18–24, 2009) is a good opportunity to try your first green chemistry event!
  • Help Shape the ACS Strategic Plan for 2010 and Beyond
The ACS Board of Directors and its Planning Committee would like your opinion on ACS strategy, and how to support our vision of “Improving people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry.”

A proposed draft of the revised ACS Strategic Plan for 2010 and Beyond has been posted on the ACS Network. ACS student chapters are urged to provide input into the draft revision of the plan. Join the ACS Network (www.acs.org/network) to log into the strategic plan group and tell us what you think!
  • Share ACS Resources with K-12 Teachers
Tell elementary, middle, and high school teachers about the outstanding resources the American Chemical Society develops specifically for them. Review resources, many of which are free or low cost, and proudly suggest the most suitable ones by name. This simple act will help teachers give their students great experiences learning science.
  • Support the U.S. Commemorative Stamp Campaign
In celebration of 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry, ACS is working with other groups to urge the United States Postal Service (USPS) to adopt chemistry as a theme for a commemorative stamp, celebrating the contributions of chemistry to the well-being of humankind in the U.S. and worldwide.

USPS gets 50,000 subject requests per year, but awards only 25 commemorative stamps per year. Your efforts to contribute to this cause this year are very important and very much appreciated!
