Summary

To protect the health of U.S. citizens as well as the environment, many in the public health community, science, and industry are looking to the principles of green chemistry to provide safer alternatives to toxic chemicals. Along with evaluating the toxicity of current chemical substances, the design and implementation of alternatives will be a key component in safe chemicals management. This briefing will look at the science behind safer alternatives research, the opportunities and barriers that influence their implementation in industry, and the policy instruments that could help the U.S. encourage progress toward safer products and processes.
