Global Activities and Events

ACS organizes and sponsors a variety of events including conferences, symposia and workshops to provide chemists with opportunities for international collaboration and professional advancement. Please visit this site often for updates on recent and upcoming events that cross regions.

ACS Committee on International Activities (IAC) Meetings at the US Department of State

The IAC Chair and IAC Subcommittee Chairs met with high level officials from the US Department of State in order to discuss ways that the ACS and executive branch agencies could cooperate to advance mutual goals and initiatives.

Chemical Sciences and Society Symposia (CS3)
The CS3 series, hosted by the funding agencies and chemical societies of the US, Germany, China, Japan and the UK, convenes eminent researchers from each participating country to explore frontier chemistry research and its potential application to global challenges. By design, each meeting in the CS3 series, hosted in turn by each of the organizing countries, is to focus on a particular key societal challenge, as mutually identified by meeting organizers, and the role of chemical research in addressing the challenge. The focus of the first CS3 meeting was solar energy, with a meeting theme “Sunshine to Power the World”, and the meeting was held in Kloster Seeon, with Germany serving as host.

Powering the World with Sunlight is a white paper which includes advice from CS3 participants to policymakers, highlighting the role of chemical research in reaching solutions to energy challenges and offering advice on promising research directions for advancement in solar energy.

Plans are underway for a 2010 CS3 meeting, pending support from the five funding agencies, to be held in the UK with a focus on Sustainable Materials.

CS3 Dinner Discussion at the “German House”, Washington, DC

Scientists from Germany and the US met during the 2009 ACS National Meeting in DC to discuss ways to move forward following the successful CS3 meeting in Germany.

Ongoing Global Programs

External Cooperative Research Programs

Developmental Therapeutics Program of the U.S. National Cancer Institute operates an anti-cancer screening program for the benefit of the extramural research community. The program, which is operated at no cost to suppliers, accepts both natural and synthetic compounds from scientists in the academic and industrial communities worldwide.

International Programme in the Chemical Sciences (IPICS) supports a broad range of chemical research; organic, inorganic and biological; analytical, physical, synthetic and structural; basic and more applied research. IPICS also encourages interdisciplinary research, based on well-founded knowledge within the participating disciplines. One third of the support goes to regional and interregional collaboration. IPICS maintains regional programs and networks in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) focuses on capacity building for the peaceful applications of chemistry in areas which are relevant to the Chemical Weapons Convention. Members include many countries from Africa and the Middle East, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, and Europe and Central Asia. Programs run by the OPCW are primarily designed for member states whose economies are either developing or in transition.

Meetings

  • PITTCON
Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (PITTCON)
One of the Society’s most established international partnerships exists with PITTCON. Each year, a delegation of chemical scientists from around the world receives funding to attend the PITTCON meeting. This exciting partnership has facilitated participation in this events by delegations from Latin America (2006), the Balkans (2007), Southeast Asia (2008), Central America (2009) and North Africa and the Middle East (2010).
