ACS Fellows Program

Recognizing Members for Their Accomplishments

In July 2009, the American Chemical Society announced its first class of 163 ACS Fellows. These ACS members were selected as Fellows based on their contributions to the chemical sciences and outstanding service to ACS. Each Fellow received a very distinguished lapel pin and certificate to commemorate the honor. In addition, a ceremony was held during the Fall 2009 National Meeting where the more than 100 Fellows who were able to attend were presented with the pin and certificate by the 2009 Immediate Past President and heard congratulatory remarks from a number of speakers. As one Fellow commented, “I’m honored to be selected among the first batch of ACS Fellows, particularly as I look down the list and see what a distinguished group I’m in.” The honorees represented a broad spectrum of ACS members and included 16 Priestley Medalists.

The Program is gearing up for the 2010 cycle, which will be widely publicized among the ACS membership. In the meantime, here are some steps you can take to make the 2010 program a great success:

  • Identify a nominee. You will be the primary nominator.
  • Begin gathering information about his/her educational background, professional history, and honors and awards that he/she might have received.
  • Identify two secondary nominators. Alert the secondary nominators that they will each have to provide a letter of recommendation.
  • Nominations from local sections, divisions and ACS committees must come from the chairs. While the chair may delegate the responsibility of submitting the nomination to another officer, the nomination must be endorsed by the chair.

Any member can submit a nomination. We will also seek nominations from divisions, local sections and ACS committees.

The names of the 2010 Fellows will be announced in Chemical & Engineering News in July. The new Fellows will be recognized and honored at a ceremony during the Fall 2010 ACS National Meeting in Boston.
