Iraqi Virtual Science Library
U.S. government officials and representatives from the scientific community launched the Iraqi Virtual Science Library (IVSL) during a packed ceremony on May 3, 2006, at the National Academies in Washington, D.C. The American Chemical Society was the first of more than 20 scientific publishers and other organizations to agree to offer deeply discounted electronic access to 17,500 full-text scientific journal articles to Iraqi chemists, engineers and students.

Science for Peace in the Middle East
- Conference Uses Science to Build Bridges in Region
In mid-December 2007, scientists from Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, the Palestinian Authority, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates attended "Frontiers of Chemical Sciences III: Research & Education in the Middle East," in Istanbul, Turkey. The event was sponsored by the American Chemical Society; the Royal Society of Chemistry; German Chemical Society, Columbia College Chicago, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization. Read more about the conference in C&EN.
- Malta Conference Aims to Strengthen Scientific Ties in Troubled Region
Scientists from 12 Middle Eastern nations and the Palestinian Authority met from Nov. 4 to 10, 2005, in Malta for a second conference designed to forge relationships between scientists in the region. Malta 2, as the conference was called, was organized by the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the German Chemical Society, and the International Union of Pure & Applied Chemistry. It built upon the progress made to overcome political and cultural boundaries during a similar meeting held in Malta two years ago.
- Scientists from the Middle East Meet in Malta
For five days in December 2003, scientists from 10 nations in the Middle East met in Malta to tackle problems of research and education in the chemical sciences in the politically and economically troubled region. The conference, "Frontiers of Chemical Sciences: Research & Education in the Middle East," was organized by the International Activities Committee of the American Chemical Society and cosponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry in the UK.
