Activities and Events in Europe

ACS organizes and sponsors a variety of events including conferences, symposia and workshops to provide chemists with opportunities for international collaboration and professional advancement. Listed below are some upcoming and recent activities as well as past events.

CS3 Participants at Kloster Seeon, Germany

Chemical Sciences and Society Symposia (CS3)

The ACS participated in a pilot symposium in July, 2009 in Klosterseeon, Germany, under the auspices of the Chemical Sciences and Society Symposia (CS3). The CS3 program has been developed collaboratively by the funding agencies and professional societies of the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and China, as a series of symposia which will convene eminent high level researchers from each country to explore frontier chemistry research, its potential application to global problems and overarching challenges. The series has the potential to be of great value to the global chemistry enterprise and to the world at large. The topic identified for the pilot program under CS3 is solar energy, with the symposium theme: Sunshine to Power the World. See the August 3, 2009 issue of C&EN for the story.

“C6” in Paris, France, July 12-15, 2007

ACS, CSJ (Japan), GDCh (Germany), KNCV (Netherlands), RSC (England) and SFC (France) scientific organizations gathered to discuss the role of chemistry in safeguarding the planet, including sustainable development. The meeting, organized by the French Society of Chemistry, which becomes the Chemical Society of France, gathers the presidents and leaders of these companies every two years. International Research Experience for Undergraduates (IREU), April 2007

The American Chemical Society, with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the collaboration of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauch Dienst (DAAD), launched a pilot program allowing U.S. and German undergraduates to participate in paid summer research internships at universities around Germany and the United States, respectively. Students in this exchange program worked closely with the members of the host laboratory and interacted with students and others in the host country.

Transatlantic Frontiers of Chemistry Symposium in Durham, NH, August 10—13, 2006

The ACS, in partnership with the German Chemical Society (GDCh) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), sponsored the biennial Transatlantic Frontiers of Chemistry Symposium which aimed to help the young scientists attending look outside not only their national borders but also their disciplinary borders.
