Activities and Events in Asia and the Pacific
ACS organizes and sponsors a variety of events including conferences, symposia and workshops to provide chemists in Asia and the Pacific with opportunities for professional advancement. Listed below are some recent activities and past events.
- US-China Early Career Workshop for Chemical Scientists
During the week of October 26, 2009, a delegation of highly esteemed early-career scientists from the US traveled to Beijing to take part in parallel workshops on New Materials (with sub-themes including: Energy, Nano and Bio/Medicinal Chemistry) and Supramolecular Chemistry. Workshop agendas included time for individual researchers to present cutting edge research in these fields as well as time for moderated “roundtable discussions” to discuss the future of these fields and likely areas of future collaboration.
By inviting promising early career researchers in these fields of chemical sciences and engineering from the US and China, the workshops, which were funded jointly by a grant from the US National Science Foundation (US NSF) and the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC), aim to foster collaborative projects which tackle some of the most complex global challenges faced by the world today.
US participants were treated to tours of local universities by co-organizers Xi Zhang of Tsinghua University (Supramolecular meeting) and Limin Qi of Peking University (New Materials meeting).
- Energy Research Frontiers Symposium (ERFS)
The first joint symposium between the American Chemical Society (ACS) and Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), took place in Dalian, China, November 4-5, 2008 and focused on chemical solutions to the challenge of providing adequate energy while mitigating environmental impacts.
- Chinese Deans Visit
In an innovative program to share information and experiences on how chemistry departments in both the U.S. and China are organized to support teaching, research, and service, an ACS-organized visiting delegation of five deans from leading Chinese universities toured the US from Jan. 26 to Feb. 4, 2008.
- Chinese and U.S. Researchers in Chemical Biology Meet in Shanghai
Twenty-four of the leading researchers in chemical biology from the U.S. and China met in May 22, 2007 to discuss the latest advances in chemical biology. The workshop was the first of a series organized by the ACS and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
- Chemists Forge New Bonds in India
Meeting brings US and Indian scientists together to share ideas and build networks. – Chemical & Engineering News, January 16, 2006
- Building Bridges, Forging Bonds for 21st Century Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology
The American Chemical Society and India's Council on Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) successfully held their first joint conference at the CSIR National Chemical Laboratory in Pune, India, January 6–9, 2006
- Symposium at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology in Hyderabad, India, January 11–12, 2006
During this mini-symposium at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), the ACS and CSIR collaborated on a workshop which brought together early-career researchers from India and the United States. View a list of the US participants and their abstracts.
