Activities and Events in the Americas

ACS organizes and sponsors a variety of events including conferences, symposia and workshops to provide chemists in the Americas with opportunities for professional advancement. Listed below are some recent activities and past events.

  • SERMACS 2009
    The Puerto Rico Section of the ACS is hosting the 61st Southeast Regional Meeting of the ACS which will be held on October 20-23, 2009 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center located in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
  • FLAQ 2008
    The Latin American Federation of Chemical Associations (FLAQ) held the FLAQ 2008 Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, July 27 – August 1, 2008. Learn about ACS involvement and access presentations.
  • Biomass Conversion to Fuels and Chemicals Symposium in Águas de Lindóia, Brazil
    In a partnership among the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), this symposium held in May 30–31, 2007, brought together key Brazilian and US researchers and innovators active in the area of biomass conversion science to catalyze bilateral scientific networks and to develop a roadmap for enhanced and sustained research collaboration between the two countries.   • Dispatches from Brazil
    The ACS, in partnership with the Brazilian Chemical Society, and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), recently organized a tour of biofuel research labs, production facilities, and demonstration projects in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil from May 29–June 4, 2007. The tour was funded by the National Science Foundation and included ES&T's Erika D. Engelhaupt and C&EN's Stephen K. Ritter.
  • 27th Latin American Congress on Chemistry and the 6th International Congress on Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in Havana City, Cuba, October 16–20, 2006
    The events were hosted by the Latin American Federation of Chemical Associations (FLAQ). Among the distinguished scientists to participate as lecturers was ACS former President Ann Nalley. View her presentation and views

  • Chemistry Education Workshops at the Universidad de Valle de Guatemala
    ACS representatives teamed with university hosts in June 2006 to present one-week activity-based learning workshops for 32 participants. Read a summary of the workshop in both English and Spanish.
