The Department of Member Communities and the Committee on Local Section Activities hold teleconferences periodically to provide ongoing training and support for local section officers. The audio transcripts of these conferences are provided here.
The ACS Constitution requires local sections and divisions to elect their own officers, Councilors and Alternate Councilors. However, most specifics of the election process are governed by bylaws. In this webinar, sponsored by the Committee on Nominations & Elections, proper procedures for paper and electronic balloting, handling election disputes, determining when unit bylaw changes are needed and who to contact, and tips for finding candidates are reviewed. The webinar also includes an extensive Q&A section.
The ACS Leadership Institute is designed to prepare and provide the necessary tools for local section leaders. The Pre Leadership Institute Webinar is not only for those attending the Institute but for all local section officers in leadership positions. Topics included in the webinar are the nuts and bolts of leading a local section, communication and available resources, and local section leadership.
The ACS Local Section & Division Treasurer’s Workshop was held in conjunction with the ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, August 20, 2012. Facilitated by the ACS Financial Services unit, the workshop covered topics including: The Role of Division/Local Section Treasurer, Preparing for Compliance with IRS Reporting Requirements, Budgeting, Whether to incorporate or not to incorporate.
The 2012 National Chemistry Week webinar featured the theme overview and available resources. Suggestions for promotion and utilizing public relations were provided as well as how to evaluate the success of the program and activities. Also discussed was the self-nomination process utilizing the FORMS program for 2013 ChemLuminary awards.

The Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED) 2012 Outreach Webinar featured the theme overview, a snapshot of how local sections are participating, and available resources for coordinators. Suggestions for promotion and utilizing public relations were provided as well as how to evaluate the success of the program and activities.

As a follow-up to the 2011 Leadership Institute held in January, the Committee on Local Section Activities (LSAC) reviewed a check-list for completing 2011 and transitioning into 2012. Information on available grants for new activities was provided, and a host of technology resources such as eRosters, FORMS, website hosting, the ACS Network, and many others were reviewed.
