In an effort to add value to an already very successful conference, we expanded the structure-based drug design session of the 5th annual “Discovery & Selection of Successful Drug Candidates” conference to a full day. Chairs Andrew Combs of Incyte, and Greg Roth of The Burnham Institute for Medical Research, were joined this year by co-chair Scott Kuduk of Merck, as well as Vinod Patel of Amgen and Guy Bemis of Vertex, who developed the structure-based drug design portion of this program. Together, they gathered another group of highly-regarded pharmaceutical industry scientists, who lectured and collectively presented about 20 case studies over the course of the symposia.
The plenary speaker was Magid Abou-Gharbia of Temple University, recently retired VP of Wyeth. The keynote speaker for the structure-based drug design program was Peter Mueller of Vertex.
This conference was geared specifically for medicinal chemists and focuses on the key drivers for discovery of new drug candidates. In addition to the SBDD program, sessions were held on blood brain barrier permeability and PK/PD successful transitions to the clinic. In both sessions, four speakers lectured on their research in a case study format, specifically addressing and providing prospective on the session topic.
Four VPs of pharmaceutical companies make presentations on small molecule drugs that have been discovered and advanced through proof of concept, or been successfully marketed by their companies. Scott Biller of Novartis, William Greenlee of Schering Plough, Terrence Kelly of Boehringer Ingelheim and Alan Palkowitz of Eli Lilly shared their perspectives on how the compounds were discovered, lessons learned, and how these lessons have been instituted into their company’s current drug discovery processes.
