Fuchsine, also known as rosaniline hydrochloride and magenta I, is one of the many coal-tar dyes synthesized by Emil and Otto Fischer; they first reported it in 1878. Even though it displays a magenta color when dissolved in water, its crystals are lustrous metallic green.
