Molecule of the Week

Minoxidil

Serendipity often leads to the use of molecules for applications that are quite different from the original intended use; minoxidil is an excellent example. It was first used as a drug for treating high blood pressure; but in the 1980s, it was introduced as a topical treatment to slow hair loss and even promote the growth of new hair. It is sold as a 5% foam for men and a 2% solution for women.
