LaShanda T. J. Korley joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland) in July 2007 as an assistant professor in the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering. She was appointed to the Nord Distinguished Assistant Professorship in July 2009. She earned a B.S. degree in chemistry and engineering from Clark Atlanta University and a B.S. in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta) in 1999. She completed her doctoral studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge) in the Department Chemical Engineering and the Program in Polymer Science and Technology in 2005. She was the recipient of the Provost’s Academic Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship at Cornell University, where she completed a two-year postdoctoral appointment.
Korley’s research focuses on the understanding of how domain architecture and structural interplay (cross-linking and binding) influence mechanical toughness. Complementary to this research focus is an interest in the manipulation of the architecture of materials (polymers and inorganic–organic hybrids) through nanoscale processing techniques, in which anisotropy in mechanical and other properties can be achieved through directed assembly of material nanostructure.
Korley also organizes a variety of mentoring and outreach activities that target Cleveland-area school systems. She is the recent recipient of the NSF BRIGE award and the ACS PRF Starter G grant. She was also awarded a faculty development grant from the Sherwin Williams Company.
