National Lab Day is more than just a day. It's a nationwide initiative to build local communities of support that will foster ongoing collaborations among volunteers, students and educators.
Volunteers — university students, scientists, engineers, other STEM professionals and, more broadly, members of the community — will work together with educators and students to improve labs and discovery-based science experiences for students in grades 6-12.
In the first week of May, 2010 we will celebrate this collaboration with National Lab Day activities across the country.
Join ACS Chemistry Ambassadors around the country in providing high quality, hands-on, discovery-based lab experiences to middle and high school students in your community. ACS members are critical to the success of National Lab Day.Video from White House Web site.
Visit the National Lab Day website and register as a chemist and a member of the ACS. You’ll be asked to indicate your location and the role you’ll be able to play in National Lab Day activities. When you do, you’ll receive an e-mail welcoming you to the Chemistry Ambassadors program and offering suggestions and resources to help you plan your participation.
Teachers across the country are signing up, in hopes that a scientist in their community will be able to help improve a lab or provide a lab experience for their classes. Community volunteers are also being asked to register.
You might install software or identify useful Web resources, fix and find equipment, implement hands-on projects, help with science fairs, chaperone field trips, help with lesson development, or be an advisor for an after-school program. Connect with your teachers through the National Lab Day registry and find out!
In whatever way you choose to participate, you’ll know that you’re contributing to science, technology, engineering and math education for students in your community.
The ACS Chemistry Ambassadors program offers tips and resources to help you connect with a local teacher and improve science education, whether you have a lot of time, or a little. Connect with a teacher to become a classroom resource, or simply send an email introducing educators to ACS resources. Chemistry Ambassadors can help you make a difference, for National Lab Day or any day.
