ACS Board of Directors

The ACS Board of Directors, the Society's chief governing body, is chartered to "have, hold, and administer all the property, funds, and affairs of the Society." The Board is made up of 16 members:

  • Six District Directors elected by the membership of the region from which they are to serve;
  • Six Directors-at-Large elected by Councilors;
  • The ACS President, President-elect and Immediate Past President;
  • The Executive Director of the Society

Dr. Thomas H. Lane, President

Dow Corning

Thomas H. Lane, director of global science and technology outreach at Dow Corning, Midland, Michigan. Received BS (Chemistry) from Purdue University, 1974; MS (C hemistry), Central Michigan University, 1979; Ph.D., Open University (Milton Keynes, England), 1990. ACS member since 1973

Bruce E. Bursten, Immediate Past President

Dr. Bursten is Dean of the University of Tennessee's College of Arts and Sciences and a distinguished professor of chemistry. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has been an ACS member since 1974.

Dr. Joseph Francisco, President Elect

Purdue University

Joseph S. Francisco is the William E. Moore Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Science and Chemistry at Purdue University. He completed his undergraduate studies in Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin and he received his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983. He has been a member of the American Chemical Society since 1991.

Madeleine Jacobs, Executive Director & CEO

American Chemical Society

Previously serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Chemical and Engineering News (C&EN), 2004 marks Ms. Jacobs first year as Executive Director of the American Chemical Society. She worked for C&EN from 1969 until 1972 and returned again in 1993. She is a much-honored science journalist, an internationally sought after public speaker, and brings an extensive familiarity and understanding of Society programs, products, and services.
