Clifford and Kitty Hach, founders of the The Hach Company, established the Hach Scientific Foundation in 1982 to encourage students to pursue chemistry at the undergraduate level. In 2000, the Foundation took on greater numbers of scholars, working through universities to select students based on chemistry aptitude, interest, and need.
In 2005, the foundation decided to focus on the high demand field of chemistry education, particularly kindergarten through high school, by establishing a land-grant scholarship program for chemistry majors seeking a teaching career.
The Second Career Teacher Scholarship Program was also put in place in 2006 for career chemists to become teachers, and later the Foundation extended its outreach by providing grants to support high school chemistry teachers in need of classroom teaching materials and equipment.
In January 2009, the Hach Scientific Foundation transferred its assets to ACS, which is now charged with administering its scholarship and grant programs.
The ACS-Hach Second Career Teacher Scholarship aims to serve the high demand for secondary and postsecondary teachers in the field of chemistry through scholarships to help chemists earn degrees in education or become certified to teach. The Second Career Chemistry Teacher Scholarship is available to all students with chemistry work experience, a degree in chemistry, and acceptance into either a masters in education or teacher certification program.
ACS-Hach provides 200 scholarships each year to undergraduate students with an interest in teaching chemistry. Students are selected on the bases of chemistry aptitude, interest, and need. The selection process is administered by partnering universities. Interested candidates should approach participating universities directly.
The ACS-Hach High School Chemistry Grant is awarded to teachers seeking funds to support ideas that transform classroom learning and encourage student development.
