Fortune-telling fish, magic sand and secret message-making are just a few of the hands-on experiments children can have fun with at a free special American Chemical Society Presidential event — Celebrating Chemistry: Kids & Chemistry LIVE! — on Saturday, March 25th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lower Exhibit Hall at Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta.
The theme for the event is “The Joy of Toys.” It is sponsored by the ACS Education Division and Committee on Community Activities and coincides with the Society’s 231st national meeting in Atlanta. ACS is the world’s largest scientific society.
The activities, which have been screened for safety, will use only household substances.
Among the other experiments featured are Cartesian divers, making bouncy polymer balls and secret messages.
During the event, chemists will demonstrate scientific principles through interactive, hands-on activities with children to give them a better appreciation for science and help them understand some of the ways that chemistry affects their lives.
For further information, call Andrea Bennett, ACS Education Division, at 202-872-6249 or the science center, located at 156 Heaton Park Drive NE, at 678-874-7102. To view a variety of entertaining scientific activities for children, go to Science for Kids.
