IREU Summer Research Internship Application Information for U.S. Students
The following information is for U.S. students interested in applying for summer research opportunities in Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom through the ACS International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (IREU) exchange program.
Research internships start in mid-May or later. Dates vary by country and research group, and will be arranged on an individual basis. Visit the websites for more information.

Who can apply?
To apply for the ACS-IREU program, you must:
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
- Be currently enrolled full-time as undergraduates in chemistry or a discipline closely related to chemistry, such as biochemistry or chemical engineering
- Have prior experience working in a research laboratory (outside of the normal coursework)
- Be rising juniors or seniors by the end of the program
Student Responsibilities and Expectations
Students accepted to the program are expected to:
- Work full-time (40+ hours per week) in the laboratory
- Submit a full scientific report of research results to the ACS
- Prepare an abstract and present a poster at the Fall ACS national meeting.
- Maintain communication with ACS program organizers throughout their stay in Europe via email, phone, or other means
- Complete program entrance and exit surveys and respond to future yearly surveys from ACS regarding career/graduate school choices
How to apply?
The deadline to apply for a summer research internship is January 31, 2010.
- Complete the online application form by January 31, 2010. You will receive a confirmation email upon submission.
- Arrange for 2 professors (at least one must be a chemistry professor) to complete the online recommendation form by Jan. 31, 2010.

Washington, DC 20036 - a stipend (paid in US $) equivalent to 650 euro/month to cover living expenses (housing, meals, etc.)
- round-trip airfare
- paid expenses for a pre-departure orientation in Washington, D.C.
- $750 reimbursement for presenting results at the 2010 ACS national meeting
- $350 reimbursement for language instruction
- Health and accidental insurance

If you are interested in working at a research laboratory in Italy, France, or the United Kingdom (Scotland), you must:

| If you are interested in research in Germany, you must:
Apply through the German Academic Exchange Service‘s Research Internship in Science and Engineering (RISE) program by January 31, 2010.
Be sure to submit a complete application and provide a response for the question asking whether you have prior research experience.
In cooperation with the DAAD, ACS will select 15 students from successful RISE applicants to receive the prestigious ACS-RISE-IREU Scholarship in lieu of the RISE benefits.
You may select multiple research projects and rank them in order of preference. If two institutions accept the same student, the final placement will be made based on the student’s background, training, and specific needs of the research projects.
