Cincinnati Chemists Visit With Congressional Delegation

Members of the ACS Cincinnati Local Section continued their yearly tradition of reaching out to legislators during the July 4 congressional recess.

This year the group highlighted the importance of math and science education. Specifically, the grouped discussed the importance of the Math and Science Partnership programs at the National Science Foundation and the Department of Education. The group also discussed issues related to undergraduate math and science education.

Appearing in the photograph (left to right) are:
Katie Hunt
(ACS President-elect),
Joel Shulman,

Diane Grob Schmidt,

Representative Steve Chabot (R-OH),

Diana McGill,
and unidentified ACS member.

The participants met with Representative Steve Chabot (R-OH) and staff members from the offices of Representative Geoff Davis (R-KY), Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY), Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Senator George Voinovich (R-OH). While not committing to the ACS funding request for the partnership programs, the legislative staff agreed that having a strong foundation in math and science education is critically important for their state and the entire nation.

We thank Diane Grob Schmidt of Proctor & Gamble and the ACS Board of Directors, Joel Shulman of the University of Cincinnati (formally with Procter & Gamble), and Diana McGill of Northern Kentucky University for their time and effort to advocate for math and science education.

If you or your local section would like to participate in similar meetings, please email Brad Smith, Manager, Grassroots and Member Involvement or call 1-800-227-5558 ext. 4479.
