Savannah River Local Section Meet with U.S Representatives and Senators

In conjunction with the Savannah River Local Section’s presentation of the Denise L. Creech Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher Award to Mrs. Marcheta Sheerer of Augusta Christian Schools, our section’s Government Affairs Committee (GAC) arranged local office visits with three of the four members of our Georgia Congressional delegation. (The fourth member was newly elected a couple weeks prior to our planned visits and did not yet have his new office located or staffed.)

From Left to Right:
Mr. Jim Hussey (Sen. Chambliss Office),
Prof. Stephanie Myers
(ACS-SR GAC Member),
Ms. Marcheta Sherer
(ACS-SR 2007 Dennis L. Creech
Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher Award Winner,
Augusta Christian Schools),
Dr. Daniel McCabe (ACS-SR GAC Member/Immediate Past Chair),
Ms. Nancy Bobbitt
(Sen. Isakson Office),
Dr. Christopher Bannochie (ACS-SR GAC Chair/Councilor)

Though the Savannah River Local Section is a two-state section with access to four U.S Senators and three U.S. Representatives, we limited our visits to our Georgia members of Congress since the winner of our 2007 Creech Award was from Georgia. Our plan was to present Mrs. Sheerer as our Creech Award winner and discuss the ACS education policy statements.

We successfully arranged visits with the local representatives for Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA). Due to a last minute scheduling conflict, we had to give up our visit with Representative John Barrow (D-GA), but I was able to drop the written statements off with his district director.
