Chad Mirkin and Paul Weiss, both leaders in the world of nanotechnology, discuss the impact of their work in the first episode of Chemistry over Coffee: Conversations with Celebrated Scientists. Chemistry over Coffee features in-depth conversations between world-renowned chemists and related scientists discussing their work and the state of their field.

In the video, Chad Mirkin, Ph.D., Director of Northwestern’s International Institute for Nanotechnology, discusses his research on using gold particles to create promising new medical diagnostic tools. These tools could lead to future cancer treatments and ways to track and treat diseases at earlier stages. Mirkin’s technological discoveries have been disseminated throughout the world in over 30 commercial products, and they continue to fuel the development of many fields, including chemistry, biology, medicine and materials science.

Paul S. Weiss, Ph.D., Director of the California Nanosystems Institute and Editor-in-Chief of the journal ACS Nano, researches atomic-scale properties of surfaces and complex molecular structures. He and his team’s work helps scientists understand and control chemistry and materials at the smallest scales. Their work may lead to improved nanofabrication techniques and molecular machines for use in medicine, engineering and materials.
