Industrial Chemists Serving in ACS Governance

“Participating in ACS governance truly changed my career. Like many people from industry, a colleague invited me to get involved, and as a result, avenues opened to me that I could not have traveled any other way. I was fortunate to be elected as an ACS President and Member of the Board. It is an extraordinary opportunity. But for all levels of ACS governance, I will say that everyone can receive training and have the opportunity to lead projects or even committees. In my experience, there are more and better opportunities for leadership in ACS than exist in many companies.

There are benefits to your company…you are visible and a credible representative of your firm, but the benefit of personal growth, is what passes the "worth it" test for me.”

Chemistry is Fun!

“Many years ago as an industrial chemist, I started getting involved with my local ACS section by attending some local ACS programs and volunteering to help with National Chemistry Week activities. It was a wonderful way to extend my network and meet interesting people with both similar and different interests and experiences. Over the years, ACS local section activities have provided me (and many others I know) with numerous opportunities for a variety of leadership roles. After getting elected to ACS Council and serving on national ACS committees in leadership roles, today I continue to find satisfaction in giving back to our profession and serving our members on the ACS Board of Directors.”

"Every chemist who is a member of ACS benefits from the many opportunities it provides to publish original research in high-quality ACS journals and to meet and interact with other chemists at the National and Regional meetings and in the local sections. After seeing the many ways ACS has contributed to my career in industry, I wanted to give something back. It has been a pleasure for me to participate in ACS activities, especially in the Division of Medicinal Chemistry, and more recently in the Division of Organic Chemistry. I’ve had the chance to meet and work with many enthusiastic and creative scientists in the two divisions and in the North Jersey Local Section. I have learned a lot from these interactions.  My participation in ACS governance activities has helped me to enhance my communication and organizational skills, and to expand my network of contacts in the industry. The divisions and local sections are always looking for support and new ideas, and I encourage all industrial chemists to consider contributing their time and creativity to the ACS."
