American Institute of Chemical Engineers
The chemical process industry competes with the transportation, commercial and residential heating, and electric power generation sectorsfor feedstocks based on petroleum and natural gas. These competing industry sectors have considerably higher demands for these feedstocks; therefore, the chemical process industry’s demand for these materials doesn’t determine the price or availability. However, the industry still must survive in the face of global competition and energy balances for these feedstocks. Hear from industry executives on their strategies to cope with the challenges and from government and other experts for their views on realistic scenarios for the future. Take this unique opportunity to discuss these issues in Houston, TX, April 25–27, 2007.
Register Now for the 2007 Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference
The 2007 Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference will take place June 25–28, 2007 in Washington, DC. The theme of this year’s conference is From Small Steps to Giant Leaps—Breakthrough Innovations for Sustainability. Experts in green chemistry and green engineering will identify breakthroughs that have advanced, or will advance, green chemistry and green engineering to significant new levels of innovation.
Breakthroughs Made
Some speakers will discuss breakthroughs they have recently made. In these cases, conference attendees will have the chance to learn of the latest innovations for sustainability.
Breakthroughs Needed
Other speakers will focus on innovations that need to take place in order for significant advances in sustainability to be made. In these cases, the presentations will serve as calls to action, challenging all participants to focus their efforts on achieving these breakthroughs.
To register or learn more about the conference, please visit the Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference.

Update on ACS Fall Regional Meetings

Abstracts and advance registration will be opening within the next four weeks for the five fall regional meetings:
All the regional meetings are linked to the ACS Regional Meetings web site. You can also book a room for a particular meeting on each meeting’s Web site. You are urged to do so soon, because the meetings are expected to sell out.
In her January 1 President’s Message published in Chemical & Engineering News, ACS President Katie Hunt asked ACS members to be “advocates for science” by joining the ACS Legislative Action Network (LAN).
LAN members receive e-mail alerts prior to key congressional decisions. These alerts explore the issue’s background, the potential effect it might have on the scientific enterprise, and the position the ACS holds. By clicking on a Web link provided in the alert, participants can access the ACS Legislative Action Center to review the issue further and send letters to their legislators within minutes. In addition, the monthly Capitol Connection e-mail newsletter keeps members up to date on decisions being made on Capitol Hill and in the White House.
The more voices advocating for chemistry, the more informed legislators will be before enacting legislation.
In response to the growing demand for scientific experts in the legal, accounting, and consulting fields, ACS is launching ChemInsight—a scientific experts matching service.

Legal professionals often find themselves involved in litigation with scientific topics that a lay person would have difficulty understanding. They resolve this problem by hiring experts to assist in the understanding of scientific issues, make pretrial preparations, or provide testimony to persuade a jury during trial. In these roles, experts often play a critical role in determining the course and outcome of a case. Demand for experts is not limited to the legal domain. In the wake of the Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002, forensic accountants and consulting firms are also seeking experts to provide insights into the sciences, technologies, processes, and other areas with strong scientific content. As chemical and allied sciences increasingly find their way into commercially successful products and services, the demand for scientific experts to help legal and other professionals is bound to increase.
Initially, ChemInsight plans to offer two services:
By helping scientists in chemical and allied sciences gain access to opportunities beyond their core disciplines, ChemInsight would enable them to earn additional income and solve challenging problems in a new context, thereby enhancing their visibility beyond the scientific community. This would also help legal, consulting, and accounting firms solve the ever-increasing number of cases and problems involving complex scientific topics.
If you have expertise in a relevant science area, the ACS invites you to list with ChemInsight. Listing with ChemInsight offers several advantages over other expert services in the market, such as:
ChemInsight is a new initiative of the ACS Office of New Business Development. Thomas Smith serves as the manager of ChemInsight. For more information, please visit ChemInsight.
