The ACS Scholars Program acquired 15 new corporate donors and more than $65,000 in donations thanks to the strong efforts of ACS leadership.
In a joint October 20 letter to more than 100 chemical industry leaders, ACS Past-President Bill Carroll and Jack Gerard, president and CEO of the American Chemistry Council, touted the ACS Scholars Program as “an opportunity to help attract new talent to the chemistry enterprise.” The appeal also included a March/April 2006 American Chemistry article about the successful program.
As a result, the ACS Development Office received pledges of support for the program from Akzo Nobel, Arch Chemicals, Bio-Cide International, Brenntag North America, Johnson Matthey, Kuehne Chemical, Lanxess, Lubrizol, Nalco, National Starch and Chemical, Perstorp Polyols, Sasol North America, Solvay North America, Sunoco, and Univar. The donations ranged from $2,500 to $5,000 and will provide a scholarship for one or two ACS Scholars.
The ACS Scholars Program—a college scholarship program that helps academically gifted African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students pursue studies in the chemical sciences—has awarded more than $8 million to over 1,700 students in its first 11 years.

The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), American Section, awarded the chemical industry’s most prestigious honor—the 2007 Chemical Industry Medal—to Raj L. Gupta, Chairman, President, and CEO of Rohm and Haas Co. during ceremonies at the Palace Hotel in New York City on March 8.
The Chemical Industry Medal is awarded annually “for contributions toward the growth of the chemical industry.” The award is especially notable in that the membership of the SCI is composed of the leaders of the chemical industry, most of whom work within the highest ranks of their respective companies.
During his 35-year career with Rohm and Haas, Gupta has helped to transform the company, with its Philadelphia-based headquarters, into a global powerhouse that generates revenues of $8 billion a year by producing and selling specialty materials on six continents. He also has applied his business acumen to leadership roles at many for-profit and nonprofit organizations.
