How do you participate in the Heroes of Chemistry 2009 Program?

The nominating criteria

Any private or publicly owned for-profit company (including subunits, divisions, and wholly-owned subsidiaries) may nominate an individual chemist, biochemist, chemical engineer, or team of scientists (with at least one chemical scientist) who have demonstrated excellence in the research and development of a commercial product that has had a dramatic impact on the welfare and progress of humanity. Nominees must demonstrate significant and lasting contributions through their chemical work.

If a team of individuals is being nominated, highlight the contributions made by each chemical scientist toward the innovation, development, and commercialization of the product(s). Emphasize chemistry's central role in the development of the product(s) being highlighted.

Technology or development partnerships between more than one for-profit company are welcome to co-nominate a person or a team.

Management approval and support of the nomination are necessary. There are no fees associated with the submission of a nomination. However, we ask each nominating company to financially support the travel and hotel costs of each Hero and an invited guest to attend the August 17, 2008 celebration in Philadelphia, PA along with their corporate officers. Please note that should a team from your company be honored, we may request that a maximum of three team members be selected as representatives at the celebration.

The nomination package

One nomination form should be completed for each nominee.

Descriptive summary: Summarize the work your nominee(s) has done to develop and commercialize the product. Address the product's chemical impact and commercial use, and its influence and benefits to humanity. Please keep your summary to a maximum of two pages.

Financial information: Summarize the market success and economic impact of the nominated innovation.

Supporting materials: Any brochures, articles, or press releases that describe the impact of the nominee(s) or his/her product are encouraged.

Biography or résumé: One should be submitted for each nominee.

All nominations must be received by February 23, 2009.

The selection process

A panel of judges will select the 2009 Heroes of Chemistry on the basis of:

  • The technical merit of the chemical innovation, including the talent and foresight demonstrated by the nominee(s);
  • The commercial impact of the product(s) on the marketplace, including the market share and/or strong financial performance of the product(s), and
  • The benefits to mankind through the product(s)'s performance.

Each selected Hero and his or her nominating company will be notified by May 2009.
