Zaida C. Morales-Martinez
Recipient Zaida C. Morales-Martinez, a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida International University, was recognized for exemplifying the utmost qualities of an ACS volunteer. She is enthusiastic and dedicated, with ideas, a vision, and the ability to transform those ideas and vision into a more integrated and better Society. The keynote address was entitled “Doors Close, Windows Open”.
Bill Trammell
Established in 1995, the Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach recognizes outstanding achievement in the field of public outreach by a member of the American Chemical Society. The Committee on Public Relations and Communications selects the recipient annually. This year’s recipient is Bill Trammell, who has been an active volunteer with the National Science Center, a lead for local section NCW and outreach events, and a chemistry demonstrator for audiences of all ages. His contributions include developing the key to the popular “Periodic Table of the Elephants”, and a teaching toolkit of videos and classroom activities on a variety of chemistry topics.
Richland Local Section
The award is presented for their "Girls in Science” program, a hands-on investigation inviting more than 100 girls to use critical-thinking and interdisciplinary techniques to solve the question, "Is this an alien attack?”
Greater Houston Local Section
This award is presented to the Greater Houston section for its participation in the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s Energy Conservation Club kickoff, creating posters to demonstrate patron’s newfound knowledge in water conservation and alternative energies.
South Carolina Local Section
In collaboration with Claflin University and through their Girls Emulating Maturity, Strength, and Scholarship Program, girls in grades 3-8 were taught to become leaders in science and math by participating in workshops using UV-Vis X-ray fluorescence and spectrometers, and spending a week in Cape Canaveral to learn about robotics, Legos and chemistry.
Virginia Local Section
The Virginia Section's Women Chemists Committee sponsored a chemistry career discussion panel for students. Six chemists representing chemistry careers in teaching, research, business, and the law shared their stories with the 30 participants.
Georgia Local Section
The Georgia Section’s "Navigating the New Employment Landscape" program provided unemployed and under-employed chemists direct access to Human Resource professionals and recruiters to assist them with managing their job search. This resulted with two of fourteen job seekers being hired immediately.
Milwaukee Local Section
Presentations representing all areas of chemistry were given at Milwaukee’s Second Annual YCC Poster Mixer. A National Chemistry Week booth at the event provided handouts and a special gift for high school students and teachers. Poster awards were made possible through a grant from the ACS Division of Small Chemical Businesses.
North Jersey Local Section
The North Jersey YCC held two movie screenings of "Naturally Obsessed: The Making of a Scientist"; a YCC annual summer picnic; a Fall Happy Hour; and three National Chemistry Week activities integrating common household items and food products with a Ghostbusters theme to make marshmallow men and their own version of "slimer" attracting children, teens and adults.
New York Local Section
The reactivated New York YCC held a social mixer, a Career Panel and Discussion program, a Brooklyn Brewery Tour, and a joint seminar event with the Chemical Marketing & Economics Group.
Division of Business Development & Management
A BMGT symposium, Chemistry: the Future-Proof Profession, featured 12 chemists, who have parlayed their chemistry skills and talents to unusual roles. The job growth symposium and networking event targeted a local audience, featured a live webcast, and continued a discussion with stakeholders.
Richland Local Section
Nutrition was the focus when ACS student chapter members joined the Richland section in offering a month-long program for talented and gifted students and Saturday Science to children from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla.
North Jersey Local Section
Throughout 2010, North Jersey volunteers from industry, academia and local schools focused on bringing high quality programs to high school students. Such programs included: ChemExpo, Project SEED, Chemistry Olympiad and a recognition dinner.
Richland Local Section
Members of the Richland Local Section provided a number of high quality programs exposing students to the wonder of chemistry. These included Girls in Science, Saturday Science and nutrition workshops for local students.
PIttsburgh Local Section
For seven consecutive years, the Pittsburgh Section has hosted a Project SEED program sponsoring a total number of 29 students and 5 scholarships. Most recent successful activities include fundraising and a blog website.
Delaware Local Section
The Delaware Local Section worked with U.S. Senator Ted Kaufman to facilitate a Chemical and Engineering News guest comment on scientific research and education legislation. Delaware leaders also organized a reception for local section members with Senator Kaufman.
Syracuse Local Section
A one-day sustainability fair was held bringing information to the public about the connections among science, engineering and sustainability. More than 600 participants learned about green products and services from 55 vendors and exhibitors, and also attended a symposium on sustainable living and a discussion on personal sustainability options.
Red River Valley Local Section
The Red River Valley Local Section sponsored a Developing Communication Strategies Leadership Development Course, underwritten by an ACS grant. The event was held at the Minnesota State University and was considered a huge success.
Georgia Local Section
The Georgia Section is recognized for its continuing support of the middle and high school student career fair; the Super Science Saturday event held in partnership with the local NOBCChE chapter; and the Science Fair Academy.
Richland Local Section
The Richland section held “Saturday Science” at Blue Mountain Community College with 35 middle school students that included many Native Americans. Students conducted hands-on activities revolving around nutrition and closed the event with a magic show.
Southeast Regional Meeting - SERMACS 2009
Over 1300 participants attended the 2009 SERMACS in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The over 750 oral and poster presentations included talks by Nobel Laureates Roald Hoffmann and Sir Harold Kroto. The variety of special events culminated with the 4th annual Festival de Quimica which attracted an additional 500 community participants.
Nashville Local Section
The theme for National Chemistry Week was magical. The science center was turned into a Harry Potter adventure; volunteers dressed as Harry Potter characters; and kids came dressed as Harry Potter himself.
Cincinnati Local Section
The Cincinnati section had chemistry presenters and volunteers at 31 different libraries throughout Indiana and Northern Kentucky. The chemistry demonstrations were also held at local venues such as the Cincinnati Museum Center and local college campuses.
Richland Local Section
"Girls in Science" in its 9th year continues to draw a large crowd and is the crown of NCW and Diversity and Inclusion activities for the Section. With help from over 60 volunteers, the event served 100+ girls in grades 6-8.
Syracuse Local Section
The National Chemistry Week celebration was held on Mole Day at East Syracuse Minoa High School with more than 200 visitors and almost 150 volunteers. More than nine rooms were set up for each of the hands-on activities and demonstrations.
Georgia Local Section
The Georgia Section expanded on their "Chemistry Teacher NCW Care Packages" program by sending packages to 29 high school and 17 middle school teachers, representing over 7200 students. The packages included National Chemistry Week give-aways and publications.
Pittsburgh Local Section
For the 12th consecutive year, the Section’s National Chemistry Week celebration consisted of a two-day event with 335 volunteers representing 31 groups helping to conduct hands-on activities related to the National Chemistry Week theme. Attendance for the event was 4,363.
Cleveland Local Section
In a hands-on program, over 2500 students and 150 adults were invited to go "behind the scenes" to find out how science and chemistry goes into the "mystery and magic" of a movie set. Volunteers prepared self-contained kits with sufficient materials for students to participate in five individual experiments and two group experiments.
Santa Clara Valley Local Section
Celebrating the National Chemistry Week 2010 theme, the "Teach the Teachers" workshop for middle and elementary school teachers was held where teachers performed experiments such as pH color changes and demonstrated the chemistry behind slime, fake blood, and magic writing.
Syracuse Local Section
The Syracuse Section’s Sustainability Fair attracted over 600 people, provided seminars and promoted green products and services. The event was a networking opportunity bringing together businesses and vendors working toward sustainability and highlighting a new coalition, the Sustainable Upstate Network.
Richland Local Section
Richland Section student members and Eastern Oregon University faculty hosted a weekly group of talented and gifted students over one month exploring chemistry and nutrition; relating to fats, proteins and carbohydrates; and learning about nutritional labels. The program concluded with a poster of a macromolecule that presented their findings to classmates.
Brazosport Local Section
Along with their partners, the Brazosport section provided science activities for 5,000 Cub Scouts. The celebration was sponsored by the Sam Houston Area Council with over 26,000 Scouts and families in attendance.
Alaska Local Section
For the first time, Alaska participated in the Project SEED program in Fairbanks and received media coverage through efforts of their Public Relations committee. They also cosponsored a highly successful Earth Day celebration and Science Cafe in Fairbanks, and a science fair in Juneau.
Savannah River Local Section
Savannah River participated in many community outreach events including Adopt a Highway; the Business, Innovation, and Technology Expo; and College Night for high school students. A Green Chemistry award was sponsored for middle school students. Local 5th graders also performed a National Lab Day activity.
Midland Local Section
2010 activities included SciFest, attended by 1000 people, and highlighted 35 science exhibits and a science camp for children. Earth Day featured 13 exhibitors at the Midland Center for the Arts attracting 500 people, and the accomplishments of local academic members and technicians were recognized at the Spring banquet.
Indiana Local Section
Activating many new local section volunteers, Indiana sponsored 14 events including 3 new ones, and prepared for the 2011 regional meeting. Their community outreach event targeted high school and college students interested in chemistry careers. And their National Chemistry Week event had over 5,000 attend where local companies and universities hosted booths with activities promoting chemistry.
San Diego Local Section
San Diego’s 18 special events in 2010 included undergraduate poster sessions at 8 section meetings, a series of seminars on chemistry legal issues and career management, participation in the 56th Annual Greater San Diego Science & Engineering Fair, and the distribution of 210 Merck Indices.
Northeastern Local Section
The Northeastern section activities included the 10th anniversary of an Exchange Program with Germany, a lecture and demonstrations with the Museum of Science for high school students, and a panel discussion with the ACS President resulting in industry participation, press coverage, and increased member involvement for a winter function.
