Delaware Local Section
The Delaware section received this award for its year-round Kids & Chemistry program that reached over 5,000 children and adults in every school district in the state, private and parochial schools, and scout troops.
Portland Local Section
The 2010 Award was presented to the Portland Local Section for its effort to introduce high school chemistry teachers to the Section and the ACS by hand-delivering more than 250 copies of the Merck Index to schools throughout the state.
Georgia Local Section
The Georgia Local Section Women Chemists Committee celebrated 2009 with a theme of "Chemistry and Cooking". The WCC hosted section member Shirley Corriher, a biochemist and chef, to talk about her James Beard Award-Winning cookbook "BakeWise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking".
Brazosport Local Section
Brazosport continued their strong program from 2008 by introducing two new series in 2009. A Career Development program entitled "Chemists Helping the Unemployed” that focused on members and the community, and a Chemistry Demonstration series entitled "The Magic of Science" intended to instill interest in science amongst K-9 students.
North Jersey Local Section
Over 800 job seekers were reached by monthly Careers in Transition meetings, job boards at topical group meetings, and career talks at scientific meetings. Also, the section’s younger chemists partnered with Rutgers Chemistry Society presenting a career program attended by 121 younger chemists, students and speakers.
Michigan State University Local Section
The YCC sponsored an omelet breakfast to welcome incoming graduate students. Nearly 90% of the incoming students attended, doubling the YCC’s membership. The welcome breakfasts will become a yearly event for incoming students that will hopefully lead to increasing the group’s longevity.
Detroit Local Section
The Detroit YCC organized a series of 10 well-attended programs with a wide range of appeal. Each program was planned to include an educational component as well as to facilitate socialization and networking opportunities.
North Jersey Local Section
In just two years, the North Jersey YCC went from 6 to 110 active members by holding numerous events including the Rutgers Science Careers Symposium, held in conjunction with the Rutgers Chemistry Society. More than a dozen sponsors were recruited to provide information about educational programs, career options, and job opportunities.
Division of Agricultural & Food Chemistry
Partially supported with an ACS Innovative Projects Grant, the Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry sponsored the Young Scientist Award Symposium to attract outstanding young scientists from food-related fields to ACS National Meetings.
Division of Computers in Chemistry
An innovative, bilingual, and well-attended workshop sponsored by the COMP Division featuring the construction of an instant supercomputer provided the unique opportunity to do public science in order to solve a current research problem with a real time audience.
Division of Organic Chemistry
The Organic Division is being recognized for establishing an annual symposium to provide opportunities for Assistant Professors to present their work in a high profile setting at a national meeting preceding their tenure decisions.
Division of Nuclear Chemistry & Technology (NUCL) & the Savannah River Local Section
The Savannah River Section and the Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology were recognized for their outstanding collaborative effort to provide items for the Actinide and Transactinide elements during the revitalization of the Living Periodic Table of Elements.
Greater Houston Local Section
The Greater Houston Local Section was recognized for involving undergraduate students in events, featuring student chapters in the newsletter, and offering mini-grants for regional and national meetings. A student member picnic generated plans for joint projects in 2010.
New York Local Section
During 2009, the New York Section reached over 2,000 high school students and teachers. Activities included Project SEED, Chemistry Olympiad, Chemagination, poster sessions, awards for students and teachers, special Chemistry days and shows, Westchester Kids Fair, and the High School Teacher Topical Group.
Detroit Local Section
Detroit Kids & Chemistry conducted numerous programs in 2009, including classroom visits, career fairs, and museum events with different hands-on experiments. Over 70 volunteers engaged in these outreach activities which impacted over 1,000 kids and their families.
Indiana Local Section
The Indiana Section has been active in the Project SEED program for over 23 years. They have supported and mentored over 145 students of which 20 students were recipients of Project SEED College Scholarships.
San Diego Local Section
San Diego organized and collaborated with other local scientific organizations to engage federal and state legislators in providing forums for Local Section members to learn about and discuss public policy issues such as science research, STEM education, sustainability, and innovation.
Red River Valley Local Section
Red River Valley hosted a successful Leadership Development course attracting scientists from all over the Section’s large geographic area. Interest in the training was demonstrated by the fact that both undergraduate and graduate students, research fellows, and professors drove in many cases between 80 and 110 miles one way to attend.
Nashville Local Section
The Nashville Local Section organized Celebrate Chemistry at the Adventure Science Center to make it easier and safer for those with disabilities to visit and learn about the elements at each of the 20 activities provided. The event attracted over 1,000 people.
Nashville Local Section
Partnering with the Middle Tennessee State University Expanding Your Horizons Conference, the Nashville section attracted over 300 middle school and 70 high school girls. The Local Section funded 45 scholarships, sponsored the chemistry workshops and provided National Chemistry Week materials for door prizes. To date, they have served over 4000 girls through the MTSU program.
60th Southeast Regional Meeting - SERMACS 2008
SERMACS 2008, hosted by the Nashville Local Section, attracted over 1600 attendees including 450 undergraduates and featured approximately 900 presentations including a plenary session by Noble Laureate Robert Grubbs, a variety of workshops, and a two-day undergraduate program hosted by the Western Kentucky Student Affiliate Chapter.
64th Northwest Regional Meeting - NORM 2009
NORM 2009, hosted by the Puget Sound Local Section, attracted over 350 attendees, featured 208 abstracts, a Wizards of Chemistry Show, Carole Berg’s one woman performance of Marie Curie, a symposium celebrating the section’s 100th anniversary, and the awards banquet at the Tacoma Museum of Glass complete with Hot Shop demonstrations.
Syracuse Local Section
The Syracuse Local Section held National Chemistry Week activities at the Museum of Science and Technology with free admission in celebration of National Chemistry Week; this was the first time the facility had been free and open to the public.
Pittsburgh Local Section
Through the formation of partnerships with area professional societies, non-profit organizations, local corporations and businesses, universities and student affiliate chapters, secondary schools, and local media, the Pittsburgh Section continues to offer a National Chemistry Week program with significant community involvement.
Orange County Local Section
In 2009, the Orange County section continued to build upon their vision that resulted in much increased participation in Science at the Zoo by the local population, particularly the members of the local Santa Ana community.
Princeton Local Section
Princeton University, Princeton High School, and other local scientists collaborated to present an evening of demonstrations, and hands-on activities for community members from central and northern New Jersey. Students helped with preparation, made informational posters, and played a prominent role as facilitators for the activities.
Western New York Local Section
In celebration of National Chemistry Week, the Canisius College Student Chapter organized 3 chemical demonstration shows consisting of 13 separate demonstrations each related to the theme “Chemistry, It’s Elemental”. Each show attracted more than 150 people.
Delaware Local Section
For the 2009 NCW Chemistry Fair, the Delaware Section recruited a large and enthusiastic group of industrial participants. Their support and talent enabled the Delaware Section to achieve outstanding success in the NCW Open House, with creative programming and innovative exhibits.
New York Local Section
The New York Section’s National Chemistry Week event was held in cooperation with the New York Hall of Science in Queens, and PepsiCo in Westchester reaching over 1200 people and utilizing 290 volunteers from a local high school, 12 colleges and universities, 7 local companies, and a major league baseball team.
Northeastern Local Section
The Northeastern Section and the Boston Children's Museum designed an activity to relate elements to everyday life. Samples of elements were paired with real-world examples of where those elements may be found. Bags of colored beads which represented the elemental composition of the earth's crust, the earth's atmosphere, and the human body were also available.
Puerto Rico Local Section
The Puerto Rico Local Section sponsored their traditional event called "Festival de Química" that was held at the "Paseo La Princesa" in San Juan. This event joined the efforts of the Puerto Rico Section with all the ACS Student Chapters from Puerto Rico.
Central Texas Local Section
Refining previous Chemists Celebrate Earth Day events, the Central Texas Local Section solicited additional outside help in selecting activities, staffing tables and organizing the 14 activities that included six new demonstrations directed specifically at plants.
San Diego Local Section
The San Diego Section’s outstanding and continuing marketing strategy of their monthly seminar series resulted in solid, ongoing, consistent meetings that featured two excellent speakers with broad, timely topics per meeting that led to a 200% increase in member attendance at the monthly meetings.
Southern Arizona Local Section
Utilizing an Innovative Project Grant, Southern Arizona promoted diversity and inclusion by providing adolescents with high functioning autism and their parents the opportunity to learn about the available resources in a university setting.
Syracuse Local Section
To highlight Chemists Celebrate Earth Day, the Syracuse Section continued their Adopt-a-Stream project partnering with local college students, Project Watershed, local corporations, scouting troops, and community members. During National Chemistry Week, the section partnered with the Museum of Science and Technology to host an activity-filled day at the museum utilizing many section volunteers.
Penn-Ohio Border Local Section
The Penn-Ohio Border Section sponsored a regional meeting symposium, held an elementary school teacher demonstration workshop, and hosted an annual awards banquet. One of the local high school teachers was recognized at a regional meeting and six long-time members representing over 300 years as ACS members were honored.
Brazosport Local Section
The Brazosport Section continued strong in 2009 with 9 new activities that included a Career Development series that was chronicled in the July 30 ACS webinar entitled "Chemists Helping the Unemployed", and a Chemistry Demonstrations series entitled "The Magic of Science" intended to instill an interest in science amongst K-9 students.
Nashville Local Section
In 2009, Nashville was timely with a new activity Celebrating Diversity in STEM at the Tennessee Science Teachers Conference. Collaboration with community partners, industries and committees led to three additional large successful events -- Earth Day with 6,000 participants; the Mayor’s First Day of School with 20,000 participants; and over 1,000 attended a National Chemistry Week event.
Cincinnati Local Section
The Cincinnati Section kicked-off a partnership with the Hughes STEM High School of Cincinnati that was partially funded by an Innovative Project Grant. This funding provided science tutoring through local academic laboratories and industries, and section members served as mentors. The section performed National Chemistry Week demonstrations at 35 different locations.
San Diego Local Section
In 2009, the San Diego Section’s focus was on the professional development of their members and community outreach. Career Development Workshops included networking, resume writing and job hunting. Monthly technical sessions drew a strong Pharma and senior chemists attendance, and the National Chemistry Week Chem Expo and the Science Festival were successful community outreach events.
Chicago Local Section
Chicago hosted the 38th Great Lakes Regional Meeting, started Project SEED, held their 21st annual Chemistry Day, their sixth Illinois State Fair, and initiated electronic newsletters. Nine job clubs and a job forum, hosted by Yahoo, were held, and networking websites were started to promote activities and communicate with members.
