Irving Langmuir Award in Chemical Physics

Sponsored by GE Global Research and The American Chemical Society Division of Physical Chemistry.

Purpose: To recognize and encourage outstanding interdisciplinary research in chemistry and physics, in the spirit of Irving Langmuir.

Nature: The award consists of $10,000 and a certificate, and is presented biennially in even-numbered years by the ACS. The Division of Chemical Physics of the American Physical Society makes the selection and presentation in odd-numbered years. Up to $2,500 for travel expenses to the meeting at which the award will be presented will be reimbursed.

Establishment and Support: The American Chemical Society Division of Physical Chemistry will cosponsor the award with GE Global Research in 2010. The General Electric Foundation established the award in 1964. In 2006, GE Global Research assumed full sponsorship until 2009.

Deadline: November 1 (biennial review)

Rules of Eligibility: A nominee must have made an outstanding contribution to chemical physics or physical chemistry within the 10 years preceding the year in which the award is made. The award will be granted without restriction, except that the recipient must be a resident of the United States and the monetary prize must be used in the United States or its possessions.
