Congress of the Latin American Federation of Chemical Associations (FLAQ 2008)

Biofuels and Biobased Products Symposium

July 29, 2008 – San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Colegio de Quίmicos de Puerto Rico (CQPR) jointly held the 28th Congress of the Latin American Federation of Chemical Associations (FLAQ 2008) with the annual 67th PRChem Conference & Exhibition in San Juan, Puerto Rico on July 27 – August 1, 2008.

This joint scientific event provided scientists and students a venue to collaborate and exchange ideas, build global networks, and display the latest technology advances.

As part of the FLAQ scientific program, the American Chemical Society (ACS) hosted a Biofuels and Bio-based Products Chemistry and Environmental Impacts Symposium and an Activity-Based Chemistry Education Workshop.

Documents and Presentations:

Feedstocks for Biofuels - James N. Seiber

This document provides an overview of the broad range of issues covered at the FLAQ 2008 Biofuels and Biobased Products Symposium.

High Value Bio-based Products - Justin Barone – Renewable Materials Research Group, Biological Systems Engineering, Virginia Tech

This presentation covers issues involving sustainability and the use of biological sources for non-petroleum-based chemical products that are both non-food and non-fuel sources.

EU Policy for Biofuels - Mairi J Black – Imperial College, London -

This presentation covers various issues of concern related to biofuel production from the EU perspective. Particular emphasis is given to sustainability concerns, both within the EU and internationally.

Enzyme and Microbial Conversions for Transportation Fuels - Joy Doran Peterson – Chair, Biofuels, Biopower and Biomaterials Initiative, University of Georgia

This presentation provides information on the conversion of biomass to sugars, prior to fermentation for ethanol production, highlighting the different processes needed for conversion of different biofuel feedstocks.

Biodiesel Production in South America - Luiz Pereira Ramos – Research Center in Applied Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, UFPR

This presentation covers the benefits and challenges of biofuel production in South America, including an extensive overview of the Brazilian National Program.

Biofuels Production & Environmental Impacts: A European Perspective - Graeme Walker – University of Abertay Dundee

This presentation covers the pros and cons of bioethanol production and gives an overview of second generation production, including lignocellulosic ethanol pretreatment and production.
