Eligibility, Terms, and Conditions for ACS PRF Undergraduate Faculty Sabbatical (UFS) Grants
- ACS PRF Undergraduate Faculty Sabbatical Grants are made to academic institutions for faculty scientists whose research may be sponsored by ACS PRF in accordance with subsection (a) of Article SECOND of the Agreement of Transfer of Trust creating the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund (Transfer Agreement), dated October 25, 2000. Only tenured faculty at institutions in the USA with appointments in departments that do not offer a doctoral degree are eligible for UFS grants.
- The Undergraduate Faculty Sabbatical Grant program is a matching fund program. ACS PRF will provide up to a 1:1 match of funds normally provided by the applicant’s home institution for a full-year sabbatical leave within the following limits:
a) The total provided by the home institution and ACS PRF is not to exceed one year’s salary and benefits.
b) The ACS PRF contribution to salary/benefits will be the lesser of $45,000 or the amount provided by the PI’s home institution. A maximum of $7,500 in summer salary, including benefits, to extend a 9-month sabbatical to 12 months may be requested. This amount is not subject to the match required for academic year compensation. Salary information provided with the proposal will be held confidential and used only by ACS PRF staff and Advisory Board members.
c) An additional allocation from ACS PRF of up to $5,000 can be requested, over and above the match, to cover relocation, professional travel, and/or research expenses for the principal investigator, as long as the total amount requested is no greater than $50,000.
d) No overhead or indirect costs may be charged.
- The applicant shall be responsible for the selection of a host institution and making acceptable arrangements for the sabbatical year. The applicant’s home institution will be responsible for administering the grant funds in accordance with the institution’s usual policies for sabbatical leave compensation.
- The grantee institution, by acceptance of this grant, provides assurance that support normally provided by the institution for research or for sabbatical support of the faculty member will not be diminished.
- At the end of the grant, the grantee will submit a financial report and a report of progress. The report must include an evaluation of the effectiveness of the sabbatical in meeting the goals outlined in the proposal. In addition, approximately one year after the PI’s return to the home institution a second report will be requested to evaluate the longer term impact of the sabbatical leave on the PI’s professional development and on their students and home institution. If funds remain at the expiration of the grant, contact the ACS PRF Director to discuss disposition of the remaining funds.
- The Transfer Agreement, wherever applicable, and more specifically subsections (d), (e) and (f) of the Article SECOND thereof shall be complied with by the grantee institution accepting an ACS PRF sabbatical grant. The reports required by said subsection (d), the publications required by said subsection (e), and a certified copy of any instrument of dedication required by subsection (f) of Article SECOND shall be submitted to the American Chemical Society by the grantee institution. A copy of said Transfer Agreement was downloaded with the application, is incorporated by reference, and wherever applicable shall be binding upon both the American Chemical Society and the grantee institution.
- In order to comply with the precise requirements of subsection (e) of said Article SECOND of the Transfer Agreement, each publication prepared in connection with an ACS PRF Grant, shall make acknowledgment for the support of this research to the donors of the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, in the following manner: “Acknowledgment is made to the Donors of the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, for support (or partial support) of this research.”
- In compliance with subsection (f) of said Article SECOND of the Transfer Agreement, any patent which is taken out by or on behalf of the principal investigator or the grantee institution, and which is derived from research funded in whole or in part by this grant, shall be dedicated to the public, royalty free.
- Acceptance of an ACS PRF Grant will be conditioned upon agreement by the grantee institution that in the event the principal investigator is unable for any reason to complete the proposed sabbatical, the funds, if previously paid by the American Chemical Society, shall, upon demand, be returned in full to the Society, and, further, that in the event the principal investigator is unable for any reason to continue with the research after it has commenced, this grant shall be terminated forthwith and the unexpended and unencumbered balance of any funds theretofore advanced shall be returned to the Society.
