
Chemistry in Context (CiC), the widely used textbook for non-majors, engages students in the chemistry of complex topics such as air quality, ozone depletion, and energy alternatives. Challenges for instructors include teaching chemistry on a need-to-know basis, encouraging critical thinking skills through writing, evaluating risk-benefit analysis, and facilitating effective class discussions.
What teaching methods have stood the test of time? CiC workshops answer this question through:
Instructors use graphics and web-based interactive activities to explore chapter design, activities, and student learning. Participants also work on sample decision-making activities and learn how to evaluate student success in both large and small classes.
Discussions focus on the “nuts and bolts” of implementing such an approach, with many opportunities for having your questions answered.
