10 Easy Ways for Chemical Companies to Celebrate National Chemistry Week
- Send an email to all employees recognizing National Chemistry Week (NCW) and its theme "Chemistry—It’s Elemental!" on Monday morning, October 19, 2009.
- Add the NCW logo and the following tag line to the company website, and any advertising campaigns: “Our company is proud to join the American Chemical Society in celebrating National Chemistry Week, October 18 – 24, 2009. Visit National Chemistry Week to find out more.”
- Host an open house at your plant or location.
- Buy a gift subscription to ChemMatters magazine for a high school class in your community.
- Sponsor a membership in the American Chemical Society (ACS) and a subscription to the Journal of Chemical Education for one or more high school teachers in your community.
- Sponsor a group of employees performing hand on chemistry demonstrations (see pg. 33 of
Guaranteed to Succeed) in area schools. Sponsorship could include paid leave for time spent in the classroom, demonstration supplies, and/or use of company facilities.
- Ask your company’s communications office to help the nearest ACS local section to promote their NCW activities to local media.
- Ask your company’s communications office to write an Op-Ed article about NCW for publication in a local newspaper.
- Conduct a company-wide contest to see which office or work group can most creatively assemble a periodic table. Entries could include a periodic table of cupcakes, or a periodic table of jack-o-lanterns.
- Take part in a community service project such as a blood drive, bake sale, or Habitat for Humanity construction project. Use the opportunity to highlight the contributions of chemistry in the project, i.e., electroplating nails to reduce corrosion, producing laminates for durable surfaces, using moisture barrier/insulating membranes to lower energy bills and provide a more comfortable environment.
