Connections: The Path to BIG Ideas

A workshop of inquiry-based, hands-on activities for grades 5-8

This workshop will not be offered in 2011

The Connections workshop introduces concepts in chemistry, earth science, physics, and biology through inquiry-based, hands-on activities for upper elementary and middle school curricula. Participating teachers and science coordinators receive $1,000 towards the purchase of science resources for their schools or to help build a professional development program.

Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and Dow Corning Foundation, sessions are led by experienced educators from the American Chemical Society, American Physical Society, American Geological Institute, and the National Association of Biology Teachers.

What does the workshop cover?

  • Guided, inquiry-based activities covering science concepts in chemistry, earth science, physics and biology
  • Science background for each hands-on activity
  • Teaching strategies
  • Guidance on implementing a professional development workshop

Participating teachers and science coordinators will receive $1,000, which may be used toward conducting a local professional development session or purchasing science resources. Participants also receive books, DVDs, and kits from each science society plus a certificate that may be used to apply for contact hours.

Accommodations and travel

All accommodations and meals will be provided. Travel reimbursement will be available for travel expenses up to $250 per participant.
