Upcoming Conferences

March 2009

Pollution Prevention Workshop
Keene State College, Keene, NH
March 20, 2009

This free one-day workshop is part of a cooperative program co-founded by the University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College to help New Hampshire colleges and universities reach their environmental and health and safety goals.

Among the topics to be discussed are Managing Green Buildings; PCBs in Building Materials; Waste Minimization, Cost Reduction and Recycling Management Strategies; and Electronic Environmental Record Keeping and Reporting.April 18-20, 2009

April 2009

Fifth Annual National Sustainable Design Expo and Prosperity, Planet, and People (P3) Award competition
Washington, DC
April 18-20, 2009

More than 40 college teams and numerous exhibitors will participate in the Expo. There will be displays and demonstrations of sustainable designs for alternative energy sources, agricultural applications, green chemistry, green buildings, sustainable water use, and many more sustainable technologies.

In conjunction with the Expo, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hosts its Annual P3 Award competition, designed to encourage college students to research, develop, and design scientific, technical, and policy solutions to sustainability challenges.

Fortune Brainstorm: Green 2009
Laguna Niguel, CA
April 20-22, 2009

In April 2008, Fortune hosted a gathering of over 300 top business and environmental leaders, as well as executives, academics, politicians and NGOs for the first Brainstorm: GREEN conference. They joined together for unprecedented gathering to discuss the impact of the green movement on business.

In 2009 Fortune will again convene a cross-industry, cross-disciplinary dialogue about business and the environment and address the same theme: How can business help solve the world’s big environmental problems? Our sessions will reflect the progress — or lack thereof — over the past year, as well as the changing political and economic climates, technology breakthroughs, and business model innovations.

June 2009

6th Green Chemistry & the Consumer Symposium

The King’s Manor
York, UK
June 15-16, 2009

The Green Chemistry and the Consumer project is an exciting venture from the Green Chemistry Network, aimed at delivering knowledge and understanding of Green Chemistry to consumers and retailers, and covers all chemical-dependent consumer products including clothing, furnishing, electronic goods, personal care products and food. The project also aims to engage representatives from throughout the entire supply chain and to encourage direct involvement of the retail trade in green chemistry research. The symposium will be preceded by a one day Masterclass.

13th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference

College Park, MD
June 23-25, 2009

Four years ago, the National Academy of Sciences brought together leading experts on sustainability, with a goal to define research objectives that need to be met to ensure the chemical industry’s continuing transition to greener products and processes. Much progress has been made since the resulting report was issued in 2006, “Sustainability in the Chemical Industry: Grand Challenges and Research Needs.” This year’s 13th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference spotlights many of those advances.

Among the highlights of the conference are presentations by our two keynote speakers:

  • Len Sauers, Ph.D.
Vice President, Global Sustainability, The Proctor & Gamble Company.
    Wednesday, June 24, 8:30am.
  • Jean-Michel Cousteau
Founder and President, Ocean Futures Society; Executive Vice President, The Cousteau Society.
    Thursday, June 25, 8:15am.

Conference attendees have a choice of seven different tracks, all developed around the Grand Challenges.

  • Transforming Green Chemistry and Engineering
  • Lifecycle Analysis and Green Metrics
  • Toxicology: Environmental Fate and Effects
  • Renewable Energy Fuels and Feedstocks
  • Process Design and Optimization
  • Greenhouse Gas Management and Prevention
  • Integrative Education in Green Chemistry and Engineering

The Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards will be presented Monday evening, June 22, before the conference in Washington, D.C. Winners will speak at the conference on Tuesday morning.

July 2009

9th Annual Green Chemistry in Education Workshop
Eugene, OR
July 18-24, 2009

The Workshop is for educators in the chemical sciences who are interested in incorporating green or sustainable chemistry concepts into the organic chemistry curriculum and laboratory.

Held on the University of Oregon campus, the Workshop features lectures, discussion, and hands-on time in the laboratory to address the need for green chemistry in the undergraduate curriculum.

ACS Summer School on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Energy
Colorado School of Mines
Golden, CO
July 22-30, 2009

The Summer School will explore scientific solutions to global challenges, with a special emphasis on sustainable energy. Activities are designed to provide a solid foundation in green chemistry and sustainable energy.

It is open to graduate and postdoctoral students studying in the Americas. Applicants should be interested in developing collegial relationships that will result in future collaborations.

August 2009

First International Congress on Sustainability Science and Engineering
Cincinnati, OH
August 9-12, 2009

The purpose of the Congress is to provide a common platform to practitioners of various physical and ecological sciences, engineering fields, economics, and social sciences for exchanging emerging ideas about ways and means of protecting the environment and managing its resource depletion.

The Congress brings together experts from various disciplines in order to foster an understanding of different points of view as they relate to products, processes, and systems involving sustainability principles.
