PHILADELPHIA — The American Chemical Society (ACS) is committed to enlisting the world’s scientists to address the major challenges facing humanity during the 21st Century. In carrying out that commitment, ACS is sponsoring symposia at its national meetings and has launched a major series of podcasts, Global Challenges/Chemistry Solutions.
Some of the relevant symposia are listed below. The Global Challenges podcasts are available without charge for listening on computers and downloading to portable audio devices at iTunes and other podcasting sites. The podcasts also can be accessed on ACS’s Global Challenges Web site (www.acs.org/globalchallenges). The site provides audio links and full transcripts of each podcast. Additional resources on each Global Challenges topic also are available, on the site, including information for consumers, students, and teachers.

Global Challenges/Chemistry Solutions focuses on some of the 21st Century most serious worldwide problems and how new discoveries from the labs of chemists and other scientists offer solutions. The topics include providing safe water, coping with climate change, combating disease, providing safe food, assuring a sustainable future, developing new fuels, preserving the environment, assuring personal safety and national security, and promoting public health.
Here is a quick look at selected papers and symposia at the ACS’ 236th National Meeting in Philadelphia, Aug. 17-21 that involve global challenges topics. For more detail, please use our convenient online search engine at http://oasys2.confex.com/acs/236nm/techprogram/
