08 Funding-
National Science Foundation (FY09)
Supports, at a minimum, the proposal of $6.8 billion (13.6 percent increase) under ACI and calls for higher funding in keeping with the America COMPETES Act. Supports funding for the NSF Math and Science Partnerships program to approach the authorized level of $111 million.
07 Funding-
National Institute of Standards and Technology (FY09)
Supports, at a minimum, the $634 million proposal (5.5 percent increase) for the core programs under ACI and calls for higher funding in keeping with the America COMPETES Act.
06 Funding-
National Institutes of Health (FY09)
Supports funding of $30.8 billion (6.7 percent increase).
05 Funding-Environmental Protection Agency (FY09) Supports Office of Research and Development (ORD) funding to return to $646 million (17.9 percent increase). Opposes Science to Achieve Results (STAR) extramural research and fellowship cuts and calls for a return to $110 million (124 percent increase).
04 Funding-
Department of Homeland Security (FY09)
Supports the proposal of $869 million (4.7 percent increase for the S&T Directorate.
03 Funding-
Department of Energy (FY09)
Supports, at a minimum, the proposal for the Office of Science (18.9 percent increase) under ACI and calls for higher funding in keeping with the America COMPETES Act.
02 Funding-
Department of Education (FY09)
Supports the proposed $175 million (302 percent increase) for new math and science education programs under ACI. Opposes flat funding the DoEd Math and Science Partnership program and calls for the authorized level of $450 million (151 percent increase).
01 Funding-
Department of Defense (FY09)
Calls for $2.08 billion in basic research (16.8 percent increase). Supports the president’s proposal for a $300 million increase in peer-reviewed basic research (as part of a larger $1 billion increase over five years).

12 Climate Change Reviews the science and recommends action on global climate issues.
11 Employment Non-Discrimination Recommends that federal legislation extends employment discrimination protection to include sexual orientation, gender expression, and gender identity.
10 Retirement Security Reviews the challenges chemical professionals face regarding retirement security. Additionally, ACS calls on Congress to deal with the major areas effecting the financial and health security of retirees.
09 Biomonitoring Reviews the science and interpretation of biomonitoring data in a human health context and calls for research to improve the utility of biomonitoring information in science and policy.

13 Visa Restrictions and Scientific Progress Encourages timely screening for visiting scientists and students, recognizes the need for scientific progress, and commits itself to assisting federal agencies with technical expertise.
12 Inherently Safer Technology (IST) Supports federal support of developing IST and greater use of IST in reducing risk.
11 Labeling of Chemicals Comments on OSHA proposal for global harmonization of hazard communication.
10 Ensuring Public Access to High Quality Science Opposes government policy to provide free access
publishing for all federally-funded research. Supports
2005 NIH public access policy experiment and encourages
proper analysis before further steps are taken.
01 Innovation and Competitiveness Supports innovation policies to fund both S&T research and science education, as well as establish an environment of innovation.

11 Recommendations for Enhancing the U.S. Visa System to Advance America’s Scientific and Economic Competitiveness and National Security Interests Supports timely and reasonable processes, which facilitate scientific education and exchange.
10 The Teaching of Evolutionary Theory Urges state localities to support high-quality science standards and curricula, explains the use of “theory” in a scientific context, and opposes the use of non-scientific content in the science classroom.
01 Science and Technology to Meet Our Energy Needs The American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (ACS and AIChE) believe it is critical that government, industry, and academia come together to develop a comprehensive energy policy.
