If you are planning to view a webcast on a computer over which you have administrative rights, the information below need not concern you.
If you are planning to view a webcast on a public computer or on a computer that you do not have administrative rights to, or if your company has a very restrictive firewall and other security mechanisms, you will need to forward the information below to your company’s IT department in order to make viewing the webcast courses at work possible.
“The WebEx Service Manager is software that determines the best method for communication when starting or joining a session. The WebEx Service Manager connection must authenticate properly prior to establishing a connection with the WebEx cluster in order to join the session. At the time of client installation the WebEx Service Manager attempts to establish the connection using TCP (port 1270) or HTTP port 80. The port that responds first is used for the remainder of the WebEx session.
Although TCP/IP underlies all communications it is only directly used by the web browser to initiate a connection to a web server. In many cases, this is a connection to a proxy server that is internal to the respective organization. No other connections are initiated outside of the web connection.”
“WebEx data is never sent in clear text. At minimum, the data is coded using a WebEx proprietary format. For those using SSL, additional levels of security are implemented. SSL uses 128-bit encryption and digital certificates. The end result is network security administrators have several options when working with WebEx.
Most firewalls have either TCP ports 80 or 443 open by default. Organizations with restrictive security policies can rest assured that WebEx will operate properly while keeping these ports open. Other organizations can open port 1270 on their firewall for fuller compatibility with WebEx services. It is not necessary to configure a firewall specifically for WebEx services. In the case that a WebEx site incorporates an SSL connection, all traffic is carried over HTTPS (port 443).”
