Essentials of Organic Chemistry

Overview

Have you been away from organic chemistry for a while and need a review of the basics? This course will renew your knowledge of the basics of organic chemistry by reviewing nomenclature, oxidation reduction, typical reactions of functional groups from a mechanistic perspective, stereochemistry, and medicinal chemistry.

Key Topics

  • Nomenclature of molecules containing the 12 most common functional groups (both aliphatic and aromatic)
  • Oxidation/reduction relationships between organic molecules
  • The nature of each functional group underlying the most common reaction mechanisms involving that functional group
  • Stereochemistry, hydrogen bonding, and the importance of these concepts to understanding drug/receptor interactions
  • Individual study of one mechanism of reaction (choice from several) to realize the details of reaction mechanisms

How you will benefit from this course

  • Gain confidence.
  • Regain a global perspective of the relationships of organic functional groups.
  • Understand the essential concepts for the writing of mechanisms of reactions.
  • Use the relationships between functional groups as a basis for rational molecular conversions.
  • Review the essential concepts for understanding rationales for receptor/drug interactions.

Instructor

Lindy Harrison is Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry (retired) at York College of Pennsylvania where she teaches organic chemistry and the capstone Physical Sciences Seminar, a course for learning effective technical writing and other "tools of the trade."

System Requirements

You need a high-speed Internet connection and an up-to-date version of your web browser (Internet Explorer is preferred). For the audio portion of the live session, we will use a telephone conference call for attendees from the US and Canada. You will need a phone near your computer capable of making long distance phone calls to a 1-800 number. A hands-free or speaker phone is highly recommended.

International attendees may have access to a toll-free global call-in number or use VOIP, depending on their country. An ACS staff member will contact you to complete these arrangements. Please contact us at shortcourses@acs.org, if you have any questions.
