Committee on Science

The Joint Board-Council Committee on Science provides an organizational framework to facilitate policy formation, action, and planning in several areas of ACS activity directly related to the science of chemistry.

The Committee is structured to provide a forum for consideration and coordination of the scientific activities of the many diverse units of the Society and to provide an interface among such units.

Recently, the Committee on Science reviewed its role in the Society and determined that it can best serve the members as an integrating and coordinating body, bringing together the expertise and knowledge of the Divisions and other ACS groups to illuminate issues of Society-wide concern and interest. Its aim is to augment information transfer by cooperating with divisional programming in a broad sense.

Partnering for Innovation and Competitiveness: Opportunities for the Chemical Enterprise in Energy and Environment
Organizers: Donna J. Nelson, University of Oklahoma; Ellen B. Stechel, Sandia National Laboratories; and M. Karanjikar

Overview

A looming critical need to diversify collaborative efforts, while addressing issues of urgent global significance, compels the science, technology, and engineering enterprise to look beyond traditional federally funded programs. This session is Part Two of the series Partnering for Innovation and Competitiveness.

Featured papers focus on challenges and opportunities enabled by innovative partnering, particularly in energy research and technologies, as seen from an industrial perspective. The intent is for these symposia to spark an ongoing dialog through asking thought-leaders to identify the critical ideas and issues. Afterwards, we plan to find a way to continue these discussions, and ultimately find ways other than federally funded programs to enhance the collaborations we seek.
